A £4,402 British Gas Boiler Quote, Explained Line by Line

A homeowner showed us a quote last week. It was for a new combi boiler, fully fitted. The company was British Gas. The price was £4,402.72.

We see quotes like this often. So we asked a simple question. What does the same boiler cost, fitted by a local engineer? In this case, the customer chose us. They paid £2,102 less for the same job, and we included a Hive smart thermostat. Here is the full comparison, and how to read any boiler quote yourself.
This is not a hit piece. British Gas is a large, established company, and many people are happy to use it. The point is narrower and more useful. If you understand what goes into a boiler quote, you can properly compare any two quotes and decide what is right for your home.
The quote, line by line, British Gas boiler quote explained
These figures are taken straight from the document. British Gas boiler quote explained.
Item | Price |
Ideal Logic Combi2 C30 boiler (A rated) | £1,299.00 |
Heating system installation | £1,615.13 |
Installation essentials (pipework, flue, electrical) | £1,048.59 |
Tailored extras | £690.00 |
Total gross price (inc VAT) | £4,652.72 |
Discounts (powerflush, agreed date, magnetic filter, "Summer Sale 2026") | −£250.00 |
Total fixed net price (inc VAT) | £4,402.72 |
Two things stand out.
First, the boiler itself is one line at £1,299. That is close to the normal retail price for this model. Everything else, more than £3,000, is labour, parts and extras.
Second, the quote shows a higher "gross" price of £4,652.72, then deducts £250 in discounts, including a line labelled "Summer Sale 2026". A £250 reduction on a £4,652 quote is about five per cent. Setting a high price and then offering a discount is a common sales technique. It is worth recognising it for what it is.
The finance options
The same quote offered finance with no deposit. Here are the figures from the document.
Term | APR | Monthly | Total repayable |
24 months | 0% | £183.45 | £4,402.72 |
36 months | 0% | £122.30 | £4,402.72 |
60 months | 9.9% | £92.42 | £5,545.20 |
120 months | 9.9% | £56.92 | £6,830.40 |
The 0% options cost no more than the cash price. They are a reasonable way to spread the cost if you want to. We offer 0% finance on our own installations for the same reason.
The longer options are where it gets expensive. Over 120 months at 9.9%, the same boiler costs £6,830.40. That is £2,427.68 in interest on top of the price. A low monthly figure can hide a high total. Always read the total repayable, not just the monthly payment.
What the same boiler costs fitted locally by DD Wilson Gas And Heating Engineers Ltd
The Ideal Logic Combi2 C30 is a real, well-regarded boiler. It is A rated, around 94% efficient, and built to fit in a standard kitchen cupboard.
The boiler, on its own, sells for around £1,290 to £1,560, including VAT, from trade and online suppliers, depending on the exact version and whether the system filter and a longer warranty are included. Fitted by an independent Gas Safe engineer, with the flue, filter and sundries included, the typical all-in price runs from about £1,650 to £2,350. Those figures come from boiler comparison services such as Boiler Guide and the Federation of Master Builders.

A like-for-like swap of this kind is exactly what our boiler installation and combi-to-combi swap services cover, day in, day out.
The British Gas quote includes a power-flush and a magnetic system filter, so it is not a bare like-for-like. Even allowing for that, a power-flush and a filter added to an independent quote would not close the gap. You would still expect to pay well under £3,000 for the same boiler, fitted, by a competent local engineer. For the job quoted, our price was £2,300.72. That is £2,102 less than British Gas, for the same boiler and the same core installation. We also included a Hive smart thermostat as part of our Summer Savers offer. A Hive typically costs £175 to £300, supplied and fitted, so, in total, the customer was better off by comfortably more than £2,000. Both firms ran a summer promotion. British Gas applied £250 of discounts, including a Summer Sale 2026 line, to a gross price of £4,652.72. Our "DD Wilson Gas And Heating Engineers" Summer Savers added a Hive thermostat, and our total still came in £2,102 lower.
Why national suppliers often cost more
This part is industry context, not an accusation.
A national company carries costs that a local engineer does not. Television and radio advertising. Call centres. Large sales and admin teams. Branch and fleet networks. Those costs are built into every quote it produces.
A local firm has far lower overheads. The same work can cost less because there is less to pay for behind the scenes. Neither model is wrong. They are simply different, and the difference shows up in the price.
How to read any boiler quote
This is the part to keep. Use it on every quote you receive, including ours.
Find the boiler line. Note the make, model and output. You can look up the retail price yourself in a few minutes.
Separate the boiler from the labour. Ask what the installation includes and how long it will take.
Question every extra. A powerflush, a filter or new pipework may be genuinely needed, or may be padding. Ask why each item is on the quote.
Read the warranty terms in full. A long warranty usually depends on registering the boiler within 30 days and having it serviced every year by a Gas Safe engineer. Miss those and the cover can lapse.
Confirm the engineer is Gas Safe registered. By law, anyone working on your gas boiler must be on the Gas Safe Register. You can check the register online before you let anyone start.
On finance, read the APR and the total repayable. Not the monthly figure.
Get more than one quote. Comparison services report that homeowners can save a meaningful amount, sometimes hundreds of pounds, simply by comparing.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a new combi boiler cost fitted in 2026? For a common A-rated combi such as the Ideal Logic Combi2 C30, the typical all-in price fitted by an independent Gas Safe engineer is around £1,650 to £2,350. The exact figure depends on your home, the position of the boiler and any extra work needed. DD Wilson boiler installations start from £1,599.
Is British Gas more expensive than a local engineer?
In the real quote we reviewed, British Gas quoted £4,402.72 to supply and fit an Ideal Logic Combi2 C30. For the same job, DD Wilson quoted £2,300.72, which is £2,102 less, and we included a Hive smart thermostat. Independent installers typically charge between £1,650 and £2,350 for this boiler fitted. National suppliers carry higher overheads, which is reflected in their prices. Always compare quotes for your own home.
Is the Ideal Logic Combi2 C30 a good boiler?
Yes. It is an A-rated condensing combi boiler, around 94% efficient, and well regarded for reliability and easy installation. With the system filter included it can come with a 10-year warranty, provided you register it and have it serviced each year.
What is a powerflush and do I need one?
A powerflush cleans sludge and debris out of your heating system. It is sometimes genuinely needed before a new boiler is fitted, especially on older systems. It is not always necessary. Ask the installer to explain why it is on your quote.
How do I check my installer is qualified?
Check the Gas Safe Register online. For any gas work, using a Gas Safe registered engineer is a legal requirement, not just a recommendation. All DD Wilson engineers are Gas Safe registered under registration number 583586.
Should I take 0% or longer-term boiler finance?
A 0% option costs no more than the cash price, so it is a reasonable way to spread payments. Longer terms at a higher APR add interest. One option on the quote we saw came to £6,830.40 over ten years. Read the total repayable, not the monthly figure. This is general information, not financial advice.
