A CP42 certificate is a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate issued by a Gas Safe registered engineer after inspecting commercial gas installations. It confirms that all gas appliances, pipework, ventilation and extraction systems have been tested and are safe to use. The certificate covers commercial kitchens, catering equipment, commercial boilers and any other gas-fired equipment in business premises.

Yes. Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, all businesses with gas appliances must ensure their equipment is safely maintained. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a duty of care on employers and business owners to protect people from gas-related hazards. While the regulations don't specifically name the CP42, annual gas safety inspection and certification is the accepted method of demonstrating compliance with these legal duties.

CP42 certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Annual renewal is required to maintain legal compliance. We recommend booking your renewal inspection 4-6 weeks before expiry to ensure continuous coverage.

These are different certificates for different types of property. A CP12 is a Landlord Gas Safety Record for domestic rental properties, required annually under regulations specifically covering residential lettings. A CP42 is a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate for business premises. Commercial installations typically involve higher-capacity equipment, commercial catering appliances and more complex ventilation requirements, requiring different inspection procedures and engineer qualifications.

A CP17 is an Unsafe Situations Notification. This is the form a Gas Safe engineer completes when they identify a dangerous gas installation during any inspection or service visit. A CP17 is not a safety certificate. It's a warning notice that records a hazard has been found. If your premises receives a CP17, remedial work is required before the installation can be certified safe.

Responsibility depends on your lease terms. Many commercial leases place gas safety responsibilities on the tenant/leaseholder rather than the landlord. You should check your lease carefully. If you're unsure, seek legal advice. Regardless of lease terms, whoever controls the premises has a duty of care under health and safety law to ensure gas equipment is safe.

If our engineer identifies unsafe appliances or installations, we'll explain what remedial work is required. Minor issues can often be resolved during the inspection visit. More significant problems may require parts ordering or specialist work. We don't issue a CP42 certificate until all safety issues are resolved. If an appliance is immediately dangerous, we're legally required to disconnect it and issue a warning notice (CP17).

Not necessarily. Gas Safe registration covers specific categories of work. An engineer registered for domestic appliances may not hold the qualifications required for commercial catering equipment, industrial heating or non-domestic installations. Always verify that your engineer holds the appropriate commercial categories on their Gas Safe ID card, or check the Gas Safe Register directly.
