How Do You Know It Is Time to Replace Your Boiler?
Not every boiler problem requires a full replacement. In many cases, a repair is the right call, and we will always tell you honestly which route makes more sense for your situation. That said, there are clear signs that a boiler is reaching the end of its useful life.
Age. Most boilers have a working life of 10 to 15 years. If yours is older than that, even if it is still running, it is likely operating at significantly reduced efficiency and parts availability may be limited.
Rising energy bills. Older boilers lose efficiency as components wear. If your gas bills have crept up but your usage has not changed, the boiler is often the reason.
Frequent breakdowns. One call-out in a year is not unusual. If you are phoning for repairs every few months, the cumulative cost will quickly approach the price of a new installation.
Yellow or orange flame. A gas boiler flame should always burn blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and warrants immediate attention.
Uneven heat. If some rooms are warm while others are not, the issue may be with the boiler output or an inefficient system.
Parts no longer available. Once parts for a discontinued model cannot be sourced, repair is not an option.
Which Type of Boiler Do You Need?
Choosing the wrong boiler type for your property is a costly mistake that is difficult and expensive to correct after installation. Here is a straightforward breakdown of your options.
Combi Boilers
A combi (combination) boiler provides both central heating and hot water on demand from a single unit, with no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank in the loft. They are compact, efficient and the most popular choice for homes across Merseyside. A like-for-like combi swap is typically the quickest and most cost-effective option. See our guide to combi boiler installation for more details.
System Boilers
A system boiler stores hot water in a separate cylinder, making it better suited to larger homes with higher hot water demand. Our pages on unvented systems and hot water cylinders explain the options and what to expect.
Heat-Only (Conventional) Boilers
Found in older properties with traditional heating setups. Generally, only installed as replacements where the existing pipework makes a switch to combi or system impractical.
Electric Combi Boilers
For properties off the gas grid. Visit our electric combi boiler page for details.
